In the world of health and fitness, the tables have turned. Yes, we are all trying to be healthier, but now we can in a better way. No more running miles upon miles on a treadmill, or endless hours on an elliptical. You can even save some big bucks by saying no to the gym.
Workouts have become more advanced and more affordable. With programs such as Turbofire, Zumba, and Insanity, there is sure to be a workout that fits into your wallet and schedule.
Turbofire is a high cardio workout that blends in target area strengthening, and flexibility. Classes are packed in a 12-disk set, with two classes on each. That's 24 fitness classes waiting to get you moving and on a fast track to a healthier you.
Alicia Hardin, a full time student and full time waitress, turns to Turbofire when she catches the active bug.
"I go to school full time, and work when I'm not in class," said Hardin. "Turbofire fits perfectly in my schedule and it's a workout I actually want to do. The music gives me an extra boost, and I don't even realize I'm working out."
Turbofire classes range from 60 to 10 minutes. There is also a set schedule that comes with your program and last over 90 days with one day off every week. Classes are instructed by Chalene Johnson, a TV fitness personal who designed Turbofire.
Zumba is a Latin-based dance exercise that gets your heart rate pumping while your just dancing to the beat. Classes are taught by a specialized instructor who knows the proper choreography. Zumba classes are usually conducted in a community gym, or even in some high schools. It is a fun way to get into shape, and even learn a few Cha-cha-cha's.
Zumba classes are offered for Muskingum students every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 to 6 p.m. in the Chess Center Social Hall. The class is conducted by Gina Tamburro. All students are welcome to join.
If you consider yourself an extreme kind of person, Insanity is for you. It is similar to Turbofire, but with more intensity and requires less time to accomplish the program (60 days). Shaun T is your personal trainer throughout your workout. Insanity comes with 10 disks in the set with workouts designed to kick your butt. Classes are 40 minutes each, and designed for strength, power, resistance and ab and core strength.
Andrew Parsons played baseball in college and keeps Insanity in his home to keep him on his A game, even after college.
"Sweat literally rolls off of me when I'm doing my workouts," said Parsons. "You can definitely feel the burn and see the results."
Don't feel pressured to go to the gym where everyone can see you. All you need is a little dedication and will power to get the body you have always wanted, and some extra space in your home.
