On Friday, Sept. 23 the annual First Year Seminar volleyball tournament was held in the John Glenn Gym and the Rec Center. The volleyball tournament is held for the First Year Seminar classes. The tournament allows first-years to meet each other, interact with each other, and also to get involved on campus.

"We got to play with our friends, and then at the same time we got to meet new friends, which was really nice," said first-year Brandi Moore. "Since we are freshman, it is really difficult transitioning and trying to meet new people here."

Teams even ended up designing their own uniforms for the competition. Some teams such as Offinchurch, went with the pink look to intimidate people.

"We had pink shirts with black letters on it," said Moore. "We had them made professionally for the competition."

Although the tournament was made to have fun, some teams ended up doing better than others.

"Some teams were really good, we ended up winning two but also lost two as well," said Moore. "I had a lot of fun, though, in the end."

The players in the tournament were not the only people who seemed to enjoy it. The tournament drew in quite a bit of people to come watch. Even some of the first-years who didn't participate in the tournament enjoyed it.

"It was definitely neat to sit and watch how intense some of the games got," said first-year student Maryiah Howard. "People seemed to interact really well with new people."

This event was not only beneficial to first-years, but mentors as well.

"Mentors enjoy helping the freshmen because it allows the mentors to help the freshmen adjust to college," said junior mentor Megan Darnley.

It also gave mentors a chance to get to know some of the first-year students.

"[The tournament helps] us mentors and professors get to know students on a more personal basis outside of the classroom," said Darnley.

The tournament completed with the victorious PrimeTimes, advised by Head of Men's Golf David Kirby.
