After a successful season of bow hunting for many hunters, gun season is well underway, beginning Nov. 28 and lasting through Dec. 5.

To hunt in Ohio, you must also have and carry a license permit. Compared to other states, Ohio ranks among the top deer harvested.

The gun season is something that some hunters look forward to.

"I'm so excited for hunting season to finally be in season starting on the Monday," said junior Josh Goedel. "Every year is the same for me. I look forward to it every year. There is nothing like it."

For some hunters every year, their goal is to get a deer for fun. For others, however, it is more than just for fun. Many people in Ohio are very competitive in hunting season.

"I'm always trying to get the biggest deer I can," said junior Dylan Moeglin. "Sometimes it takes a couple days of sitting in the stand. Sometimes I end up seeing a small deer and I decide to pass it up, you only have a certain amount of deer you can get a year. So waiting on the right one is definitely the way to do it. It might take awhile, but in the end it usually always works."

Many hunters sit in their stands for long periods of time waiting for a deer.

"Sitting in a stand is really not that bad actually," said sophomore Joe Wheeler. "It is kind of relaxing to be honest.  As long as you wear the right amount of clothes and such, it's not bad. It doesn't get too cold unless the wind is blowing, but other than that it is pretty nice and relaxing sitting in the stand by yourself."

Some hunters bring their kids along to get them interested in the sport. Many youth participate in youth gun season, a time of the year where only kids are allowed to hunt, which was Nov. 20-21.

"My dad actually loves bringing my siblings hunting," said junior Ben Carpenter. "He says it is good for them to experience it. I actually started hunting with him—he was actually the one who got me into it. It all started after I shot that first deer. Since then I have always loved hunting."

Many hunters have started their hunting adventures in pursuit of the perfect buck.

Advantages & Disadvantages of a Tree Stand

Advantages

View -- You can see above the brush in some situations.

Scent -- Your scent will drift over very close deer -- If they approach from the right direction.

Concealment -- Deer don't often look up, so tree stands put you above their line of sight -- If they are very close.

Disadvantages

No mobility -- You can't move for a better look or to get a shot.

Conspicuous -- From a distance, deer can see you without looking up. A hunter in a tree is conspicuous, especially if he or she moves.

Heavy equipment -- Transporting tree stands and climbing equipment can involve some serious work.

Danger -- Serious injuries and deaths from tree stand falls are increasingly common.
