Muskingum University will celebrate its 175th anniversary this April. Since its doors opened in 1837, the university has witnessed triumph and sadness through the eyes of the campus and the world. From the day it was founded in 1837, Muskingum has inaugurated 20 presidents and has been the alma mater to several significant alums that have gained achievements in various fields from entertainment to technology. New academic buildings have been constructed, while Paul Hall, one of Muskingum's first buildings, whose history dates back 139 years, is still in existence. In 2009, Muskingum College said goodbye to the seniors and welcomed in the first freshmen into what is now called Muskingum University.
1837- Muskingum College founded
1844- Samuel F. B. Morse dispatches the first telegraph message from Washington D.C. to Baltimore
1865- Robert E. Lee surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, effectively ending the Civil War
1876- Telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell
1894- First edition of the Black & Magenta published
1899- Muskingum football team formed
1903- Wright brothers make first flight
1904- J. Knox Montgomery is inaugurated as president
1912- Brown Chapel opens
1920- Construction is completed on Montgomery Hall
1927- Charles Lindbergh embarks on the first-ever nonstop flight from New York to Paris
1928- Cambridge Hall opens
1931- J. Knox Montgomery, the "Father of Muskingum College," dies
1935- Construction of what is now called John Glenn Gymnasium is completed
