Muskingum University's Chinese students were filled with excitement on Sunday, Jan. 22, to ring in the Chinese New Year. The festivities started at 8 p.m. and lasted until 10 p.m.
During the celebration that was held in the Kelley Coffeehouse, there were many different dishes that included hot soup and lo mein. There was also karaoke that students participated in.
"We celebrate the Chinese New Year with a Celebration Party, which is the most important festival, just like Americans celebrate Christmas," said the Chinese Club President, Louis Yi.
The Chinese New Year tradition is hundreds of years old. The Chinese New Year has many myths and legends. The most well-known is Nian.
"Basically, we celebrate the Chinese New Year because there is a fairytale monster named Nian, and we want to scare him away," said Jiaxin Yang. "We put on red paper to scare him away."
The Chinese New Year is about forgetting all of one's grudges. It is also about starting anew.
Another unique thing about the Chinese New Year is that each year has a different zodiac animal. Each different zodiac animal has a different meaning.
"This year we have a dragon as the zodiac," said Jing Huang.
Although many Chinese students are unable to spend the Chinese New Year with their families, they were able to have fun and spend it with their fellow Muskies.
