Rick Nutt's Author Talk
Last Thursday, Professor of Religion Rick Nutt gave an author talk about his book entitled An Historical Study of United States Religious Responses to the Vietnam War: a Matter of National Morality. The study centers on different religious groups reactions to the Vietnam War.
“It’s a book in which I try to survey the variety of responses that religious groups in the United States made towards Vietnam,” said Nutt.
Nutt has been working on this study since the Spring of early 2002 and it was published in 2012. He began this study after a friend suggested it to him years ago.
“Twenty years or so ago a friend suggested that it might [be] a project for me to do because we have studies of religion during World War I and World War II, but there hadn’t been any studies on the Vietnam War,” said Nutt.
Nutt was also interested in this topic also being raised during the Vietnam War.
“I grew up during the Vietnam War, and it was very influential,” Nutt said during the author talk.
He also went on to say that the concept of religion and war has been an ongoing interest of his and that he finds it interesting to look at the correlation between the two in different time periods.
Nutt explains that the idea of American Exceptionalism is related to the concept of Civil Religion. As well as, the belief that the United States is different from other countries in how the United States handles problems of morality when engaging in national affairs and to be helpful with no benefit.
“My thesis is whether you oppose the war or the United States’ involvement in the war that both sides made a kind of Exceptionalist agreement though they were different,” said Nutt.
Nutt has worked at Muskingum University for 25 years and has numerous other articles and books published.
